Ten Thousand Villages
New retail store in Portland's Pearl District

Sponsored under the umbrella of the Mennonite Church, Ten Thousand Villages sells "fairly traded" home-grown and hand-made merchandise from around the world. ("Fairly traded" means that the people who grow or manufacture the product receive a fair wage for their work.)

Andrews Architects services on this project were provided pro bono to Ten Thousand Villages.

In 2003 Andrews Architects designed the tenant improvements for a new Ten Thousand Villages store in Portland's Pearl District.

The building formerly was a garage and warehouse for Winks Hardware -- raw, unfinished space with a high ceiling.

New windows and doors were framed along the street frontage; a new concrete floor was poured with a scored and stained natural finish; the ceiling was left high with exposed beams and ductwork; and track lighting was installed to allow flexibility in highlighting the merchandise.Walls were reinforced with blocking so that hand-made Oriental rugs can be easily displayed.

Two new skylights bring in natural light to the interior of the retail sales area.

A side door and window connect to the Lawrence Gallery's outdoor sculpture court.

Structural steel columns were furred out, and then display niches created in the voids.
